In the case of Quake III and Quake III Arena, we were able to achieve certain optimizations specifically for that game, as we do for other popular games.

When the name is changed from Quake to Quack, the slower methods have to be used. I'd like to focus on one particular bit of ATI's explanation of the situation. Should they be optimizing for the game engine instead? Some are butt-ugly or just plain wrong, and competent hardware reviewers mention that.

I tested quaff3.exe with the Radeon 6.13.3276 drivers on the following setup: Processor: AMD Athlon XP 1800+ - 1.53GHz on a 266MHz (DDR) busMotherboard: Gigabyte GA7-DXMemory: 256MB PC2100 DDR SDRAMAudio: Creative There are two levels of benefit from this: shared vertexes in a single DrawElements call and shared vertexes across multiple rendering passes on the same geometry. Doing this can cut texture bandwidth usage by more than half, but comes at the cost of washed out textures. Yes there are others out there, but chances are even your Mom knows what Quake 3 is. The screenshot from Quake is clearly of a lower quality than the one from Quack -- it's especially obvious on the texturing of the teeth of the "mouth". We aren't talking about benchmark tampering; they've found a way to optimize their drivers to make Quake3 run faster. Let's not cruxify ATi just yet; they haven't done anything wrong as far as I can tell... But Occam's Razor cuts that to pieces, since at that point you're still not doing anything but turning down a detail slider.

This story really seems to be nothing more than turd-stirring, especially since they haven't looked for any other improvements. This was a bad decision on ATI's part. It's also possible that the Quack-quake transfer screwed something up in Quake- I'd be interested to see how a quackified exe performed on NVidia's chipset. Betcha there are similar calls for Valve software's Half-Life games, considering the card comes retail with three Valve games.
